Rainbow Sapphire Tennis Bracelet
A Rainbow Built From Rough
More than six months in the making, this one-of-one bracelet began with an idea that sounded simple: create an entirely natural rainbow from sapphire rough I selected and cut myself.
No commercial calibrated stones. No colors created through heat or treatment. Every sapphire was chosen for what already existed within the rough.
What makes this bracelet exceptional is not one detail alone. It is the combination of rare colors, celebrated origins, unusual clarity, consistent brilliance, and the work required to bring all 39 stones together as one cohesive spectrum.
The entire collection of rough was sourced through Joe Henley Rough, a widely recognized specialist supplier within the lapidary world. The sapphires came from Umba Valley, Madagascar, and Songea, creating a clear line of provenance across the finished piece.
Finding the colors was only the beginning.
Every sapphire also needed the transparency, clarity, and life to stand beside the others. This was especially difficult with the Umba material. Umba sapphires are known for an extraordinary natural color range, but they often contain visible inclusions. Building a lineup this clean, bright, and full of fire required an unusually selective process.
More than 60 sapphires were individually cut along the way. Some finished too small. Others carried more inclusions than I was willing to accept. A number were beautiful on their own but disrupted the balance of the final sequence.
Only 39 made the final selection.
Most of the bracelet was built from Umba Valley sapphires, chosen for their vivid pinks, yellows, greens, blues, champagne, and lavender tones. Madagascar added deeper royal blues, teal flashes, and sea-green contrast. Songea completed the spectrum with smoky gray-violet and sunset amber.
Each selected sapphire was precision cut into a custom octagonal design created to give the stones brilliance, weight, and presence. The final sequence was then arranged and set by me in 18k yellow gold.
From sourcing and selecting the rough to cutting every sapphire, building the bracelet, setting the stones, and documenting the finished work, the entire piece was created by a single artist.
A handmade stone-by-stone booklet accompanies the bracelet. It records every sapphire, its origin, its position in the sequence, and the story behind the piece.
The result is not simply a natural rainbow bracelet. It is an untreated, unusually clean, and exceptionally luminous sapphire collection that would be extraordinarily difficult to reproduce.
