Counterbalance

Counterbalance I and Counterbalance II — The Weight of Light are two sculptural studies in balance, contrast, and material.

The series began with an idea first explored through hollow laminated dichroic glass cubes: take the familiar gesture of a balanced stone stack and reinterpret it through a clean, futuristic language of glass.

Clear meets color. Polished surfaces meet frosted ones. Large forms balance over smaller forms, while transparency, reflection, and light continually shift the visual weight of each piece.

Each cube is individually fabricated and laminated with an emphasis on extremely clean seams and optical clarity.

Counterbalance I is a purely sculptural work, focused on form, reflection, color, and physical balance.

Counterbalance II — The Weight of Light expands the concept through illumination. The sculpture features adjustable RGB and white light, transforming both the glass and the surrounding space. Its base incorporates crystal and vintage cobalt blue SCHOTT glass sourced from another artist’s collection, where it had been held for more than 35 years. The cobalt wraps around a clear center, continuing the visual language of the stacked cubes all the way through the foundation of the piece.

One face was intentionally left frosted, creating another point of contrast among the otherwise polished surfaces.
